A design inspired by Franklin's JOIN, or DIE political cartoon first published in his Pennsylvania Gazette in 1754.  It illustrates a snake cut into eighths, with each snake segment representing one of the colonies. New England was represented as one segment, Delaware was omitted as it was part of Pennsylvania and Georiga was completely omitted. Nova Scotia,  Newfoundland, and British Caribbean possessions were not represented. The woodcut illustration became a symbol of colonial freedom during the War Of Independence.
